WhatsApp Business API in 2026: What Indian Businesses Need to Know

Hyyper Team  ·  04 Aug 2026  ·  0 views

WhatsApp's Business Platform has gone through significant changes that directly affect Indian businesses sending messages through the API. Meta has retired the older On-Premises API in favour of the Cloud API, refined how conversations are priced by splitting them into distinct categories, and added new capabilities such as a Calling API and AI-assisted messaging flows. This post explains each change in plain terms and what action, if any, your business needs to take.

The On-Premises API is being phased out

Meta has been sunsetting the older On-Premises API, which required businesses or their partners to host and maintain the messaging infrastructure themselves. The Cloud API is the replacement: Meta hosts the infrastructure, which means faster feature rollouts, lower setup overhead, and no need to manage servers for message sending and receiving.

For Indian businesses, this matters because any account still running on the On-Premises setup needs to migrate to the Cloud API (or to a Business Solution Provider that has already migrated) to keep sending messages without interruption. If you work with a BSP like Hyyper, this migration is typically handled on your behalf, but it's worth confirming with your provider that your account is on the Cloud API rather than a legacy setup.

Pricing has moved from broad conversation buckets to specific categories

WhatsApp Business API pricing used to be based on a simpler conversation-based model. That has evolved into distinct pricing categories — commonly referred to as Marketing, Utility, Authentication, and Service conversations — each priced differently depending on the type of message being sent and who initiates it.

  • Marketing conversations cover promotional messages, offers, and campaigns initiated by the business.
  • Utility conversations cover transactional updates such as order confirmations, delivery updates, and account alerts.
  • Authentication conversations cover one-time passwords and login verification messages.
  • Service conversations cover replies within the free customer-service window when a customer messages first.

The practical impact for Indian businesses is that campaign costs now depend heavily on how messages are categorised. A business sending a large volume of marketing broadcasts will pay differently than one relying mostly on utility notifications like shipping updates. Reviewing your message mix and correctly categorising templates can materially change your monthly WhatsApp spend.

New capabilities: Calling API and AI-assisted flows

Meta has extended the platform beyond text messaging. A Calling API now allows approved businesses to place voice calls to customers directly through WhatsApp, opening a new channel for support and sales conversations that previously required a separate phone system. Alongside this, WhatsApp has continued rolling out AI-assisted flows and campaign tools aimed at helping businesses automate responses and manage larger customer bases without proportionally increasing support headcount.

These additions are still maturing, and access, availability, and exact terms can vary by account and rollout phase. Businesses evaluating these features should confirm current availability with their BSP rather than assuming blanket access.

What Indian businesses should do now

Three practical steps follow from these changes:

  • Confirm your account is on the Cloud API, not a legacy On-Premises setup, to avoid service disruption.
  • Audit your message templates and classify them correctly across Marketing, Utility, Authentication, and Service categories, since misclassification can inflate costs unnecessarily.
  • Ask your BSP whether Calling API or AI-flow features are available on your account and whether they fit your customer support or sales workflow.

The direction of the platform is consistent: more granular pricing tied to message intent, infrastructure fully hosted by Meta, and an expanding set of channels (voice, automation) layered on top of core messaging. Businesses that stay current with these shifts, rather than assuming their setup from a year or two ago still applies unchanged, are better placed to control costs and make use of new features as they roll out.
