WhatsApp On-Premises API Sunset: What It Means for Indian Businesses

Meta is phasing out the legacy on-premises WhatsApp Business API and pushing all businesses toward the Cloud API. If your business (or your messaging vendor) is still running an on-premises deployment, you will eventually need to migrate to keep sending WhatsApp messages. This matters for a meaningful chunk of Indian businesses because many early WhatsApp API adopters in India set up on-premises servers years ago, before Meta launched the Cloud API as the default option.

What is the On-Premises API, and why is Meta retiring it

When Meta first opened the WhatsApp Business API to companies, the only option was the on-premises client: a piece of software a business (or its solution provider) had to install and run on its own servers. It required dedicated infrastructure, manual updates, and ongoing DevOps effort just to keep the messaging channel alive.

Meta later launched the Cloud API, which is hosted directly by Meta. There is no server to maintain, updates roll out automatically, and new features (flows, catalogs, calling, richer templates) typically reach Cloud API first. Because the Cloud API is cheaper for Meta to support at scale and easier for businesses to adopt, Meta has been steadily deprecating the on-premises version and encouraging migration to Cloud API, either directly or through a Business Solution Provider (BSP) like Hyyper.

On-Premises vs Cloud API: the practical differences

  • Hosting: On-premises requires your own or your vendor's servers; Cloud API is hosted by Meta.
  • Maintenance: On-premises needs manual version upgrades and monitoring; Cloud API updates automatically.
  • Setup time: Cloud API onboarding is typically faster since there is no infrastructure to provision.
  • Feature access: New WhatsApp Business features are increasingly built for Cloud API first.
  • Cost structure: Conversation-based pricing (see below) applies to both, but on-premises adds your own server and DevOps costs on top.

Why this matters for Indian businesses specifically

India has one of the largest WhatsApp user bases in the world, and Indian businesses across retail, D2C, BFSI, healthcare, and logistics were early adopters of the WhatsApp Business API. Many of them onboarded through BSPs that originally offered only on-premises hosting. If your business messaging stack still runs on an on-premises setup, it is worth checking with your provider now, rather than waiting for a forced cutover that could interrupt customer conversations, order confirmations, or OTPs.

How to migrate from On-Premises to Cloud API

  • Confirm your current setup with your BSP or internal IT team to see whether you are still on the on-premises client.
  • Choose a Cloud API-ready provider that can migrate your verified business number without losing your message history, quality rating, or approved templates.
  • Re-verify and test your approved message templates after migration, since categorisation (marketing, utility, authentication) still applies under Cloud API.
  • Plan a cutover window with minimal customer-facing disruption, ideally during low-traffic hours.
  • Decommission on-premises infrastructure once the Cloud API number is confirmed live and stable.

Pricing does not change because of hosting

It is worth clarifying: switching from on-premises to Cloud API does not change WhatsApp's underlying conversation-based pricing structure. Businesses are still billed based on conversation categories such as marketing, utility, authentication, and service conversations, regardless of whether the API is self-hosted or cloud-hosted. What changes with migration is your infrastructure cost and maintenance overhead, not Meta's per-conversation charges.

What Indian businesses should do now

If you are unsure whether your WhatsApp Business API is still running on-premises, ask your provider directly. Migrating early, on your own schedule, is far less risky than being forced into a rushed cutover later. A good BSP will handle the technical migration, template re-verification, and testing without disrupting your live customer conversations.

Frequently asked questions

Will my WhatsApp number change if I migrate from On-Premises to Cloud API?

No. A proper migration keeps your existing verified business number, message history association, and quality rating intact.

Does migrating to Cloud API cost more?

Meta's conversation-based pricing categories apply either way. In most cases, businesses save money on Cloud API because they no longer need to pay for and maintain their own servers.

Do I need technical staff to migrate?

Not necessarily. If you work with a Business Solution Provider, they typically handle the technical migration, template re-approval, and testing on your behalf.

What happens if I don't migrate?

Businesses that remain on a deprecated on-premises setup risk service interruption once Meta fully sunsets that infrastructure, which could stop outbound and inbound WhatsApp messaging until migration is completed.
